How the Festival Works
1. Your Scarecrow(s) and the Registered Number need to be
visible from the public highway during daylight hours so they can be
“spotted” by Visitors and Islanders following the Scarecrow Trail Sheet.
2. This year, your Scarecrow also needs to have a name, description or
caption next to the official number so that people following the
Scarecrow Trail using the Trail Sheets can correctly describe your
Scarecrow and your Scarecrow can be judged for the best named or
captioned Award.
3. If you are unable to make the Scarecrow(s) after Registration or it
is damaged, removed or stolen during the Festival, please continue to
display your Registered Number together with a sign saying “Withdrawn”.
4. Your Scarecrow will be photographed during Festival week. The
photographs will not go onto the website until after the Festival has
closed. This is to allow participants to follow the Scarecrow Trail
using the Trail sheets rather than the website! The photos will then
remain on the website for a year until the next Festival.
5. Independent Judges will consider all Registered entries. They will
decide the winners in each Award Category including the Caption
competition. Category prizes will be awarded on the Hayling Carnival
stage on Saturday August 2nd. The “People’s Choice” elected Scarecrow
will be decided by public ballot. “Votes” will be counted after the end
of the Festival and the result declared in the Hayling Islander and
other media shortly after.
6. The Scarecrow Trail sheet will contain the location of all Registered
Scarecrows and will be available from July 25th. Completed Trail Sheets
can be entered into a free Prize Draw.
Some suggestions which we hope will help entrants.
1. You can of course take your Scarecrow indoors at night if desired.
2. If you choose to make a traditional one stuffed with straw then Stoke
Fruit Farm, Havant Road, have kindly offered to make straw available
free to entrants as long as you show them this Letter.
3. Whether you are displaying your own Scarecrow(s) … or acting as a
Host, please keep your Scarecrow(s) on your own property or get any
necessary permission from the owners or landlords to avoid the risk of
you incurring any liability.
4. Please consider your own safety and the safety of others when
deciding where to hang, tie, mount or otherwise display your
Scarecrows! If you are in any doubt check your Public Liability
insurance. The Hayling Scarecrow Festival Committee and Hayling MTI
are a group of volunteers and are unable to advise on this.
Good luck!!
