2011 Scarecrow Festival launched this weekend

Visitors to Hayling Island this summer will once again be treated to the sight of strange figures in gardens, in shop windows and other places all over the Island!
This is the fifth year of the highly popular Hayling Island Scarecrow Festival and residents of the island have come up with a terrific selection of figures which will be on show all over the Island between Saturday 30th July and Sunday August 14th.
This year there are over a hundred entries many featuring multiple figures in all shapes and sizes. The Scarecrows are competing for the coveted awards in four categories Comical, Topical, Historical and Film & Theatre.
The winners and runners up in each category will be announced at Hayling Carnival, at Central Beachlands on Saturday August 6th at 3pm.
Marie Telford from the Hayling Island Bookshop who sponsor the Festival and chair the organising committee from Hayling’s BEST Market Town Initiative (MTI) said "We are pleased to see that there is still a lot of enthusiasm for the Scarecrow Festival from participants and visitors alike with many businesses, organisations and families on the Island taking part again this year.
The Festival aims to
- involve all those living, working on or visiting Hayling Island in a community activity
- stimulate tourism
- be fun.
To help you find them all, the organisers have again printed a Spot The Scarecrow Trail Sheet with maps of the island and indications of the location of each entry.
You can mark up your entries as you go around the Island and then enter the completed Trail Sheet into a prize draw.

There is also a chance to vote for The People’s Choice Scarecrow Award using ballot forms printed in the Trail Sheets or, thanks to The News by text voting.Details are in the Trails Sheet.
The People’s Choice ballot results will be announced on the afternoon of Sunday 21st August at the Playing On The Plaza musical event at Eastoke Corner.
